Have you recently tried a camera or photo/video editing app? Does it have a feature which changes your face to the extent, that it even surprises you? This exact technology, which manipulates the actual digital representations, is called Deepfake Technology. There’s two sides to every coin and, here too, this technology has both positive and negative aspects. While many use deepfake technology (like face editing apps) just for fun, this can create some serious issues in future.
When a digital representation (be it photo or video) of an object/person is manipulated, in a way that the originality is lost, “Deepfake” has been created. So, it is, basically, a fabricated image and video which deceives the viewers to accepting false things/information, which appear real.
Working of Deepfake
Derived from words, i.e.: “Deep Technology” and “Fake”, it employs deep learning system to produce convincing replica of a object. The system studies the object/photo/videos from multiple angles, thereby, extracting enormous amount of information; enough to imitate the behavior, gestures or speech patterns. Once deep learning system completed imitating something, GAN (Generative Adversarial Networks) comes into play. GAN detects flaws in the forged output and leads to improvement in it.
With the advancement in technology and easily availability of software tools, deepfakes number has increased tremendously in internet. As fun as it could be, deepfake technology has been reportedly causing serious issue in maintaining trust and credibility among the internet users around the world. Due to this, Facebook and other big companies have already taken a step in blocking the circulation and sharing of deepfakes in their sites.
