Apple Inc. made an announcement for the release of iPad Pro 2018, a new generation of ipad, this year in October 2018. Some noticeable changes has been introduced in their designs and internal specifications, giving users an optimum work experience. The screen size is replaced with 11 inches and 12.9 inches LED liquid retina panels. The screens were smooth as it had ProMotion and was so crisp as it had TrueTone display. The bezels increased on the sides but noticeable bezels were decreased on the chin and forehead.
The design spectrum changed drastically, both internally and externally, which made it stand out from other tablets in the market. This change grabbed the attention of many people. They were forced to purchase apple products just because of the design. Now, they are rocking an A12X Bionic chip with 4GB of RAM, which stuck with the baseline models. As usual, the ipads came with either a wifi model or a wifi+cellular model. The back camera was still a 12MP shooter and they removed the OIS support which was weird. The front-facing camera still holds 7MP shooter but, now, has the TrueDepth camera system, same as the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. Bluetooth is now 5.0 instead of 4.2, unlike older generations, which means that it can connect multiple Bluetooth devices at once.
To unlock the ipad, you can just show your face towards the front-facing camera which works in all directions(i.e.: in both portrait & landscape) as the home button no longer existed.
Now comes the interesting part…
1-year experience on the Apple iPad Pro 2018 11 inches:
So, I’ll be sharing my opinions about the latest and greatest iPad till date(as so apple appeals). Yes, I’d say the same but it still has some minor bottlenecks but doesn’t make a huge difference at all. Before the launch of iPadOS, iPad was a huge pain in the ass but with the official release of the iPadOS, it’s the best tablet in the market. Some of you may even say that it’s a laptop replacement but it hasn’t reached there yet, for now. But for some people, who use their laptop for light weight works such as replying mails, etc., it is already a laptop replacement.
Honestly talking, when I first purchased the iPad pro-2018, I thought it was a big mistake and the iPad was just a blown-up version of the iPhone. It was until the release of their new iPadOS because now I could plug in anything(camera, hard drive, pendrive, etc) and transfer any data any time. The applications got way better and the use of the whole 11inch just felt like heaven. I could do anything that my heart desired and I could even do some light video editing as well.
Being an editor and designer myself, the iPad has helped me a lot with my work and with the Apple Pencil 2, my workflow just escalated into new heights. This new version of iPad many features added to the new pencil and the lag was reduced to 9ms which was absurd because the human eye notices lag only up to 21ms.(More of the apple pencil 2 review coming soon 😉
Pros of iPad Pro-2018 11 inches:
Apps like procreate, affinity photo, affinity design, luma fusion work like a breeze. Multitasking is on another level. You could open almost any apps side by side and the new app expose made it even more smoother. My work got a lot easier as I could open up an app on half of my screen and another into the other half just for references, ideas, and tips. I could jot down ideas into the other half and implement them in the other. It’s more viable while using it than writing about it.
The screen has been made decent with ProMotion enabled with 120hz of refresh rate. The use of ProMotion made the screen so smooth that using other phones and tablets without ProMotion was just boring. The refresh rate was so high and so smooth that navigating across the home screen was just satisfying to let alone using other apps that support ProMotion.
Camera, well, the camera is par with the iPhone XR which is quite decent. The back camera has a bulge on it but does not make any difference while operating. A back camera as mentioned above is good but not as great as the new iPhone 11s. The previous model of the iPad pro had OIS but shockingly this one did not but has the software optimized image stabilization though. However, the front-facing camera is a bit updated. It now has portrait mode after the iPadOS update.
There was some viral news about the iPad pro-2018 model for the bending. I haven’t experienced any bending issues to date though and look very sturdy till now. It is surprisingly slim but sturdy. Apple says that some of the iPads had manufacturing issues and luckily mine did not.
Some cons about the iPad pro-2018 11 inches:
- Being a designer, I’d like some apps with desktop-class tools. Although it has some great apps even with desktop-class tools, it’s still a hectic job finding out where it’s located and even if you find out where it is, it’s many clicks away. On a laptop, we could just use some keyboard shortcuts but with the iPad, the keyboard folio made by apple costs around 25000 rs and that’s a bit too much on the expensive side. And even if you have the keyboard, many of the shortcut key combinations do not work. I hope that app developers notice these problems as there are thousands of users who have the same problem.
- Another con that I noticed was about the input port situation. It only has one USB type-C and you’ll be living a dongle life. Which translates into more expenses as well. But after some time, you’ll get the hang of it though.
- Another con about the ipadOS. Because the specifications on the iPad are far more superior than it is being used by the OS. simple things like mouse support should be made easier and shouldn’t be hiding inside the accessibility menu. Plus, the current cursor is not at all feasible. It’s a big slab of a circle with a dot in the middle(are you kidding Apple?). These types of simple problems could be solved in a jiffy and apple should solve it in a jiffy 😉
- THAT’S ABOUT IT WITH THE CONS FOR THE LATEST & GREATEST IPAD AVAILABLE 🙂
So, my final verdict about this apple’s product is: it is a great purchase which would make a big hole in your wallet. But totally worth it which would be with its accessories included as apple pencil is a must, mainly for creative individuals but other people can use it as well. It helps and adds with the overall iPadOS experience. I’d say it is a great device that helps to increase your workflow. But has many alternatives like iPad air, iPad mini, ipad2019, etc which also has the same iPadOS as the pro version but with outdated hardware.
Again, it is totally worth the money and you won’t regret it as well.
