Ahead of the 2020 presidential election, which includes the option to switch off the political ads and also an electoral information center.
As the election season starts, social media companies are under intense pressure from campaigners, academics and lawmakers to take action against actors misusing the platforms to sway the results of elections. The 2016 US-presidential election was heavily targeted by a kremlin-backed information campaign, with similar state backed campaigns targeting other democratic events since.
Last year Google announced the ban in micro-targeting by political advertisers, and twitter announced on almost total ban on political advertising. Whereas Facebook has been singled out as passive to ban such dishonest political advertising.
Hence, Zuckerberg has used an op-ed in USA to announce how Facebook will handle the 2020 US presidential election. As a result, Facebook will begin to allow users to turn off political ads on Facebook and Instagram.
How To Turn Off political Ads On Facebook
When a user comes across a single political ad, they can simply turn off the ad by clicking on the option. The ads may include political, electoral and social issues targeted by candidates, super PACs (Political Action Committees) & other political sponsors.
Despite all this, Zuckerberg said that Facebook will not forget to remind users to vote. Also, there will be a new feature “Voting Information center” which will provide users all the necessary information. It tells about how to register for a vote; when and how to vote; voting ID requirement and how to require a mail-in or absentee ballot. In short, This is intended as the defense against disinformation about how to vote, which are spread on Facebook during the Presidential election which misleads the democratic voters.
